MPFF 2026-01 Flowchart landing-obligation demersal fisheries
This report presents the decision-support flowchart developed for Cornelis Vrolijk BV that translate EU landing obligation rules – covering prohibited, quota, non-quota and deminimis – into practical step-by-step guidance for skippers in the demersal fishery in the Southern North Sea and English Channel.

MPFF 2026-02 Flowchart landing-obligation pelagic fisheries
This report presents two decision-support flowcharts developed for Cornelis Vrolijk BV that translate EU landing obligation rules – covering prohibited, quota, non-quota and ICCAT-managed species (tuna, swordfish, blue shark) – into practical, flag-specific step-by-step guidance for skippers in the Northeast Atlantic pelagic trawl fishery.

MPFF 2026-03 Fishing in the English Channel and southern North Sea. Trends in Fishing Effort, Landings and Spatial distributions between countries and fleets.
This report characterises fishing effort, landings and spatial distribution in the English Channel and southern North Sea (2008–2025) using three complementary data sources, finding a 30% decline in EU fishing effort (fishing days) since 2008, somewhat more spatial concentration of the remaining fleet, and a growing contribution of scallops and seaweed fisheries and a declining trend in flatfish landings in the area.

MPFF 2026-04 WQ 2026 research on the genetic population structure of cod in the North Sea
In 2026, the WQ/GenDC cod sampling program in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea collected only 9 cod samples (1 spawning female, 8 unsexed adults) from participating demersal vessels. This fell far short of the intended sampling target due to late skipper instruction and low cod encounter rates during the spawning season.

Hintzen, N. T., K. Brigden, H.-J. Kaastra, S. Mackinson, M. A. Pastoors and L. van de Pol (2025). Bias in Global Fishing Watch AIS data analyses results in overestimate of Northeast Atlantic pelagic fishing impact. ICES Journal of Marine Science 82(3).
This study shows that Global Fishing Watch’s fishing-activity estimates substantially overestimate gear deployment time (by 30-380%) when checked against detailed self-sampling data from pelagic fleets, highlighting a need for closer cooperation between data providers and the fishing/scientific community
